Stress Free Birthday Party Idea - Hire Teens as Assistants
March 31, 2009
These days birthday party planning can be extremely stressful. What used to be a relatively easy affair of cupcakes, a few games and opening presents has turned into the event of the century. Instead of looking forward to the day, moms find themselves wondering how in the world they are going to survive the day, let alone enjoy it.
Teenagers to the rescue! Hiring the older siblings and/or cousins of the birthday child or teens from your local church or neighborhood is a great way to take the stress off you if you’re planning a large involved party. And although it seems like an added expense, it’s relatively inexpensive and can be a life saver for the party and for you!
Why hire teens as birthday party assistants? Let’s look at five good reasons why you consider this for your next bash:
1. Teenagers are motivated. Teens need money. That’s just a fact. Working a short term gig with young kids is easier than babysitting and a great way to make some extra needed cash. Most parties last only about two to three hours so they can still work and have the rest of the day to spend the cash they earn at the mall or at the movies that evening.
2. Young kids love it. Little ones love teenagers and will respond to them, often better than they will to adults. Put a teenager in charge of games and even the shyest of the kids on your guest list will likely come out of her shell and join the fun.
3. It’s great experience for the teens. Chances are pretty good that the teenagers will be future parents some day and experience with working alongside parents of young children and directly with the children will help tremendously as they prepare for that. Since most teenagers are often only around their peers for a majority of their waking hours, helping them to really socialize with little ones is a great way to expand their horizons as well.
4. It’s relatively inexpensive. If you are doing a birthday party at home, hiring an entertainment professional like a clown, magician or comedian can get pretty pricey. Instead, hire some teenagers to plan the activities, games and crafts for a fraction of the cost and the kids will enjoy it just as much, or even more!
5. It will help you to stay sane. This is the most important reason of all. Hiring help for your party will allow you to enjoy the day with your child. You will also have the time and energy to entertain and serve the parents of the kids who might stay behind. Hiring a teen to be in charge of cleanup alone will save you the “ugh” factor after everyone walks out the door. And when the party is all over, you might actually look forward to the next one coming up for another child or in future years.
Think about it and start to talk about the teens in your neighborhood. You never know! You might start a young adult on her way to a profitable home based business too!

Scuba Diving in Fethiye
March 31, 2009
A holiday in Turkey provides the visitor with a feast of activities to enjoy. The expansive Mediterranean coastline is the perfect environment for all kinds of watersports, scuba diving amongst them. We look at some of the sites that surround the handsome resort of Fethiye.
Scuba Diving in Fethiye
If you choose to take your holiday in Fethiye, you’ll find a town that exudes a peaceful and easy-going charm. Unlike many other Mediterranean resorts, this is an established and historical community that can’t fail to make an impression upon you as you wander through its narrow streets and alleys, perhaps stumbling upon the central market or sampling the cuisine at one of the local restaurants. But whether by day or by night a natural highlight of a holiday in Fethiye is to be found beneath the waves. For the novice and seasoned diver alike, here is a guide to some of the sites you’ll want to visit as soon as you’ve squeezed into your wetsuit…
1. Red Island (max. depth: 25m)
Starting at a depth of 6m and following the natural slope of the seabed, you’ll reach a beautiful marine amphitheatre that curves round at a depth of 15-20m. To really appreciate the vibrant colours of the sea sponges and groupers that inhabit this area you should bring along an underwater light.
2. Sariyarlar bay (max. depth 30m)
In this bay is found a selection of stunning catacombs of tunnels and caverns, all naturally lit from above through the plethora of gaps and cracks in the rock. There are 8 tunnels in total and, to take full advantage of the sights we’d recommend bringing along an underwater light. You’re likely to discover some of the strangest finds of your holiday in Fethiye here as Brittle stars, anemones, sea cucumbers, damselfish and shrimp are to be seen in abundance.
3. Coral Cavern and Turkish Bath (max. depth 40m)
If you’re after great photos and curious creatures then this is the best dive in Fethiye. The regular inhabitants of this site include: Trumpet anemones, gem anemones, daisy strawberry, soft coral, anemones, lettuce coral, sea aubergine and many forms of lace corals. If you only have time for one dive on your holiday in Turkey, make it this one.
5. Shrimp’s Hole (max. depth 28m)
Lying at 26m depth, ‘Shrimp’s Hole’ is large enough to let 5 - 6 divers enter at one time. Though it’s important to be careful where you put your fins, so as not to disturb the silty bottom, this is a particularly exciting dive with a wealth of creatures to observe. A tall archway which makes a good exit point can also provide some fantastic ascent photos.
6. Mexican Hat (max. depth 30m)
Named ‘Mexican Hat’ as it resembles the shape of a sombrero, this underwater rift lies at 20m and is large enough to accommodate 6-8 drivers at any given time. Some of the sights to be seen include mullet, shrimp, soft coral displays and groupers. The ‘Mexican Hat’ is also home to Moray Eels, which can be seen swaying in the current from their rocky retreats. As with ‘Shrimp’s Hole’, there is a beautiful archway which makes for great photos in the right light.

Five Gadgets You Probably Don’t Need on an Everest Base Camp Trek
March 31, 2009
It’s your first Everest Base Camp Trek and you’ve packed your clothing, bedding, food, emergency supplies and sundries. But you’ve still got at least a litre of space left in your backpack. What do you really need? What indulgence do you deserve? What will baffle and irritate your trekking mates even as they burn with jealousy…?
Five Gadgets You Probably Don’t Need on an Everest Base Camp Trek
1. A Rotary Airer
What is it?:
A lightweight, four-armed, miniature, portable version of the heavy steel clothes-airer that graces your back garden.
Uselessness on an Everest Base Camp Trek?:
Pretty high. Though lightweight it’s still yet another item to strap to your backback. And, though it may be amusing to stalk around as it sits outside your tent, perhaps imagining that you’ve woken up in the land of Lilliput, there’s little you can do with it that you can’t achieve with a line of string or nylon cord.
2. Tent Speakers
What are they?:
A flexible, compact speaker set that can fill your tent with the sweet sounds of your MP3 collection wherever you may be.
Uselessness on an Everest Base Camp Trek?:
Not overt. Music may be the perfect solitary escape from the intimacy of trekking life, but imagine rousing Everest base camp to the stirring chords of Beethoven’s glorious Ninth… or heralding the onset of a storm with Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries. Who could object?
3. Pen Fishing Rod
What is it?:
A slick little tube about the size of a marker pen that thrillingly extends into a 4ft fishing rod at a moment’s notice.
Uselessness on an Everest Base Camp Trek?:
It’d be a miracle if you found fish living at altitudes above Everest base camp… but wow! It’s only the size of a pen! What if you did stumble upon a lake filled with trout at 5,600m? You’d look quite the plum if you were caught without your fishing rod! Thankfully, those fears are now a thing of the past.
4. Earmuff Headphones
What are they?:
Fluffy headphones that make you look like a Panda bear.
Uselessness on an Everest Base Camp Trek?:
Fair. If you’re any kind of hiker you’ll want to drink in the beauty of the Himalaya in silence, and if listening to your music by night your snug woollen nightcap will make their warmth-preserving properties redundant. Still, if you want to bring a bit of 80’s kitsch back to Everest base camp, trekking with these wrapped around your grinning mug could be just the ticket.
5. Handpresso Kit
What is it?:
A quite astonishing bit of kit that looks like a mixture between a 24th century bicycle pump and a water filter. By pumping up the internal pressure to 16 bar, adding some water from your thermos and a dash of coffee, you and up to 3 friends can enjoy impeccable espresso whether you’re 20,000 leagues under the sea or approaching the outer limits of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Uselessness on an Everest Base Camp Trek?:
Legendary. Firstly this would involved eschewing the traditional refreshment of tea during your adventure in the Himalaya, secondly the kit comes with specially designed espresso mugs and a set of napkins, none of which will amuse your trekking partners who have had to carry the extra tins of tuna that you ‘simply didn’t have space for’. On the other hand, think of the publicity when you stand upon the roof of the world, not haggard and exhausted like your predecessors, but buzzing from the high of history’s most high-altitude caffeine hit! We may have hit upon the new ‘Extreme Ironing’ here.

Essential Ingredients For a Holiday in Turkey
March 31, 2009
Turkey is a fascinating destination, a country that mixes traditional Islamic culture with a cosmopolitan European vibe, where ancient ruins sit along side upmarket beach resorts. When you are planning a holiday in Turkey, you get to select which ingredients to use to tailor make the experience to your liking. Here are a few of the ‘flavours’ you have to choose from to create the perfect holiday to Turkey – use as much (or as little) of each as you please…
Ancient Culture
Turkey is blessed with a treasure trove of archaeological delights. Numerous ancient civilisations, including the Greeks, Romans and the Byzantine Empire, have ruled over Turkey at one point or another, and some of the finest surviving ruins from these cultures are to be found here. Highlights include the cities of Troy and Ephesus, and if you are a history buff on a holiday to Turkey, this is one flavour you won’t want to miss out on!
Stunning Beaches
Turkey is fast becoming one of the most popular beach holiday destinations in Europe, and it is no wonder: the stunning Mediterranean coastline is rich with beaches and resorts that bask in the blazing sun during the summer months. The resorts range from naturally beautiful Olu Deniz to the bustling Marmaris, picturesque Kalkan to idyllic Akyaka. If you are going on a holiday to Turkey, you are sure to find a resort that is perfectly suited to your needs.
Exhilarating Istanbul
Nowhere else in the country is Turkey’s cultural blend more readily apparent than in its capital city. Istanbul is a vibrant destination, where ancient mosques rub shoulders with boutique shops. Haggle for souvenirs in the Grand Bazaar, stroll along the old walls of Istanbul, marvel at the wonders of the Sultanahmet Mosque, or simply relax over a potent cup of Turkish coffee in a traditional caf? – the city has a distinct flavour that it is impossible to forget, and whether you visit for a day or a week, don’t exclude Istanbul from your holiday in Turkey.
Exciting Activities
While Turkey is better known as a beach, culture and city break destination, there are plenty of activities to keep more adventurous holiday makers occupied. Golfers on a holiday to Turkey should head over to Belek – this beach resort has been especially designed as a modern day golfer’s paradise, with a dozen courses situated in a stunning location.
If you’d prefer to explore the country on foot rather than in a tour bus, the Lycian Way is the essential walk to take. Rated as one of the best footpaths in the world, the 500km route weaves along the Turkish coastline from Fethiye to Antalya, taking in spectacular beaches, mountains, and ancient Lycian ruins along the way.
Finally, if you’d like to travel in a more relaxed fashion, take a Gulet cruise along the coast – a cruise on one of these traditional wooden motor yachts is one of the most popular activities for a holiday to Turkey.
If these ‘ingredients’ have managed to whet your appetite, it is no surprise; Turkey is truly one of the most exciting and unforgettable destinations for a holiday in Europe.

Turkish Festivals of 2009
March 31, 2009
You may be planning your holiday in Turkey to coincide with one of the country’s many cultural events; you may stumble upon a festival while you’re already there. However you come across one of these exciting festivities you may just find it the highlight of your holiday to Turkey. Here’s a guide to some of the festivals coming up in Turkey in 2009.
Turkish Festivals of 2009
There are festivals of every kind awaiting you on your holiday in Turkey, and the Spring is a particularly busy time. Upcoming events boast expositions from the worlds of film and music as well as more traditional cultural pursuits. Here’s a break down of just of few of the highlights coming up in the next few months.
If it’s film that you’re looking for then you may be interested in the international film festivals set to take place in both Istanbul and Ankara. Ankara’s version is due to start of the 12th of March and runs on to the 22nd, the Istanbul festival runs throughout April, meaning that attending both is a possibility on a single holiday to Turkey! Both festivals will feature a wealth of international entrants and attract similarly diverse crowds. Previous winners of Istanbul’s international ‘Golden Tulip’ include both 1984 and A Cock and Bull Story, and in the past 20 years this festival has attracted over 2 million attendees, if this gives you an idea of just how well respected an event it is. Both festivals are a great place to see the very best of Turkish cinema that you might otherwise miss.
The music festivals of Turkey are equally well respected, with an eclectic selection available to the interested traveller. Istanbul has hosted the Efes Pilsen Blues Festival, which has attracted bluesman old and new such as John Lee Hooker and Watermelon Slim. Those of you looking for an even more urbane holiday in Turkey could pursue the Istanbul International Jazz Festival which is held in venues all over the city throughout July. This really is one of the world’s premier music festivals, and has been running for roughly the same length of time as the city’s film festival. Previous attendees include Miles Davis, Bj?rk, Eric Clapton, Pat Metheny and even trip-hop acts such as Massive Attack. If this line-up isn’t quite red-blooded enough for you then you’ll be glad to hear that Turkey is host to a wide variety of rock and metal festivals that should satisfy any craving.
Equally, if you are looking for more of a cultural connection from your Turkish festival experience then you’ll not need to look far. Istanbul is also home to festivities theatrical, artistic and choral. However, if you’d like something more idiosyncratic of Turkey then the Manisa Mesir Festival could be just the ticket. As the story goes, Ayse Hafsa Sultan, mother of Suleiman the Magnificent, was stricken with a terrible illness following the death of her husband. Pleas were sent to Merkez Muslihiddin Efendi who was known to be producing medicines from a small hospital next to the theological school. Mixing together a paste from 41 different spices and herbs he was able to save her from her affliction. These days thousands of people gather in front of the Sultan Mosque in Menisa to catch the Mesir paste as it is thrown from the Mosque’s rooftop. If you find yourself in Mesir in March during the Spring festival of Newroz then you’ll find it difficult to miss!
Here’s hoping you manage to coincide with one or all of these exciting festivals and that they form some unforgettable memories of your holiday in Turkey.

Make Chicken That Will Wow Your Family
March 31, 2009
Chicken is a basic ingredient in most kitchens. It’s more nutritious than red meat and there are so many ways to make it. Try these suggestions the next time you’re hungry for chicken!
1. Have you tried steaming it? This is perfect for a quick meal for one or two. Put a boneless, skinless chicken breast into one of those zippered steaming bags that you can find in your grocery store. Sprinkle in a little seasoning salt, some fresh ground pepper and a couple Tablespoons of BBQ sauce. Zip the bag closed and give it a shake. Cook it according the directions on the steaming bag: about six minutes for a chicken breast.
Be careful when opening- it will be hot and steamy! You will be amazed at how tender and juicy the chicken is- in no time and NO mess!
2. Make your own gourmet pizza! Use Alfredo sauce, if you like or BBQ sauce add your chicken breast, some mozzarella and bake. Who needs take out?
3. Citrus chicken sandwich- Want a sandwich that looks gourmet and tastes that way too? Brush a chicken breast with oil and grill until done. Slice it horizontally and then toss it up with a squeeze of lime juice, some sour cream and a Tablespoon of sweet chili sauce. Serve it on a crusty roll with some crisp lettuce and spinach leaves.
4. Marinate boneless skinless chicken breasts overnight, covered with Italian dressing. These are best cooked on the grill, but you can broil them as well. Toss the extra dressing. Because of the dressing, this will tend to flare up if you aren’t careful, so keep an eye on it. It’s worth the trouble.
5. Make kabobs. Cube chicken breasts and skewer them with alternative chunks of peppers, onion and zucchini. Brush with olive oil, squeeze on some lemon juice and grill or broil.
6. Cube the chicken breast and stir fry in wok or skillet until starting to brown. Add a bag of frozen broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Season with lemon pepper. Turn the heat to med-low and cover. Simmer for about 6 or 7 minutes, stirring once or twice, until veggies are done, but still firm. Serve it up!
7. Cut chicken breasts into small strips or cubes and brown. Add one can cheddar cheese soup and ? cup salsa. Heat through and spoon ? cup of the mixture onto one-half of warmed, soft flour tortillas. Moisten the edge of tortilla, fold over and press down the edges to seal. Bake in 325? for about 5-7 minutes.
8. Add chicken breast and broccoli to creamy macaroni and cheese. This is best if you use the creamiest macaroni and cheese you can. Choose homemade, frozen or the shells and cheese brands.
9. For a Mediterranean style chicken flavor, mix diced cooked chicken with some plain yogurt and Greek-style seasoning mix. Serve this on a croissant or in a pita shell.
10. Fry chicken breasts lightly in olive oil. Add sliced onion, chopped red pepper, zucchini and a clove of garlic, diced or crushed. Fry for just a few minutes and add some dried basil and a can of chopped tomatoes. Cover and simmer 15 minutes. Take off the lid and simmer 5 minutes longer. Serve with rice.

Child Custody Explained
March 31, 2009
There are a number of different types of custody arrangements that can be made in a divorce, family law, or child custody case. The types of custody orders can impact the effects of divorce on children.
First, we’ll look at actual custody. In California, there are two components to custody: legal custody and physical custody.
Physical custody is the type of custody order that says who is going to have the child and at what time. Most of the time, the courts grant Joint
Physical Custody with primary either to mom or dad. Sometimes, though, sole physical custody will be granted to one party and visitation may or may not be granted to the other.
There are many kinds of physical custody arrangements. For instance, in a 50/50 split, each parent may have the children on alternating weekends.
An 80/20 split is more common with one parent having primary custody and the other parent seeing the kids one evening a week and having the kids every other weekend.
Legal custody is the ability to make decisions for the child. This includes everything from choosing the school they attend to the authority to cut their hair. Again, in most cases, joint legal custody is granted and both parents have the ability to make decisions. This means that if they disagree on issues like what religion the child will be raised in, they must go to court to settle it.
In a limited number of cases, the Judge will decide that one party should have sole legal custody. Usually in these cases, there has been so much disharmony between the parents that it is in the children’s best interest to have just one parent making decisions for the children. In other cases, one parent has made bizarre decisions and the best route is for the other parent to have all the decision making power.
The next type of custody order involves visitation. Unsupervised visitation is the standard route and generally includes overnight visits if appropriate. In the vast majority of cases, unsupervised visitation is ordered. There has to be a specific reason for the courts to order anything other than unsupervised visitation.
In cases where there are allegations or proof of abuse (sexual, physical, or emotional), supervised visitation may be ordered. Supervised visitation requires that a monitor be present during the entire visit. Sometimes a relative or friend of the non-custodial parent qualifies as a monitor.
Other times a neutral, professional monitor must be hired.
Then there are cases where no visitation is allowed because the court determines that any contact with the party would be harmful to the child.
The court assumes that a generous amount of time spent with both parents will minimize the impact of the effects of divorce on children. The various types of deviation from the general assumption allows for custody orders to take into account that this assumption is not always correct.
Child custody and visitation decisions are never easy for a Judge to make. But, when a family is being torn apart, the court has to make the decisions it feels are in the best interests of the children.

Christmas Decorations Send You Back in Time
March 31, 2009
Do you still recall how Christmas was during your childhood? The Christmas trees with sparkling lights around and the thought of generous Santa Claus paying visit to deliver your most wished gift? That’s Christmas – a never lasting magic clinging to the memories of every person.
The doll or the car you drooled over that magically appeared under the tree. The beautiful pink gown on a most wished doll, never having any idea that it was your mother who made it. A simple, handcrafted gift, yet something that reminds you of someone special.
Christmas presents back on the olden times were never wrapped in beautiful and glittering gift wrappers with laced ribbons. They were never bought on department stores. They were easy, simple and inexpensive presents crafted with care and lovingly wrapped in old newspapers.
One thing is for sure, when it comes to Christmas cards then real paper cards are the only way to go. For most of us an e-mail Christmas greeting is just not the same as getting one delivered by the mailman. Don’t get lazy and think you can send an email and be off the hook. Sending a real Christmas card with your genuine holiday wishes is a long standing tradition and in my opinion one that should be honored.
Decorations and embellishments were never bought back then. A simple foil tree adorned with blinking lights, simple bells made out of egg cartons and foils, and memorable crocheted banners on a red and green background were enough to festoon the walls of every home.
Every member of the family is encouraged to be involved in the decorating process. It is an activity to have fun with the family, enjoying each others company and let everyone appreciate the outcome at the end of the day. Today, as we look back on the many Christmases we had, may we yearn the values we have learned and strive hard to rekindle it back.
You can easily create your own with a grape vine wreath cage. All you need to do is fill it with floral foam and attach sprigs of greenery collected from your own backyard.
Back in the colonial times, life was difficult. People then did not have a lot of material things. But they were resourceful. They made use of preserved plant materials and any kind of fruit they had on hand, and fashioned it into a beautiful, eye-catching Christmas decorations for their homes.
They used dried materials like pods of okra, cotton pods, oyster shells, dried flowers from their own garden, sprigs of magnolia, boxwood, holly, pine, pine cones, and any other kind of greenery they can collect. They also embellished their wreaths with fresh pineapples, apples, oranges, and pomegranates; all made without artificial sprays, scent or color paint.
Fresh fruits were chosen for its color brilliance as well as its keeping quality when exposed to the harsh winter weather. All of these are artistically wired onto a sturdy frame laden with greenery and dried native flowers.

Christmas is most often a time for celebration with families and friends. It’s a chance to reveal our artistic talents, skills and creativity. Unfortunately, it has also become a time of year when finances are stretched, which can bring a fair amount strains, which should not be the case.
If you paid a visit to the Williamsburg Colonial Village this season or past Christmas seasons, you will be surprised at what people can do with natural plant materials, without using artificial plastic imported objects.
History can be put at your front door by duplicating a traditional colonial wreath. There are several ways to do it. All it takes is your imagination and artistry.
