Enjoy Mourvedre Wines Under Various Names

September 30, 2009

Mourvedre grapes are mainly grown along the coastlines of France and Spain. In France the grape is called the Mourvedre, while in Spain it is called the Monastrell. Wines under either of these names come from the same type of grapes.

These grapes are grown in other countries of the world and have different names where they also have different names. In Portugal and North America, they are known as the Mataro and even in parts of France they go by the name of Estrangle-Chien. Because this grape is low in pigment, it is often used to lighten the harsh taste of some red wines, much like a Malbec (http://www.wineaccess.com/wine/grape/Malbec/) does.

The Mourvedre grape requires warm temperatures. It takes a long time to ripen and therefore requires a long growing season. Along with lots of warmth, the grapes need a lot of water, but high humidity can be dangerous to their growth.

Because these grapes are small and grow in clusters, when they are exposed to high levels of humidity, they can rot a lot faster than most other types of grapes. It takes a lot of work to grow them in a vineyard because of the constant pruning needed to make sure the grapes get the exposure to the air that they need.

Mourvedre wines are high in alcohol content and the taste varies because it depends on the area in which it is produced. However, these red wines generally have a fruity and earthy flavor. In France, this grape is mainly used in the production of blended wines, especially in the production of Grenache (http://www.wineaccess.com/wine/grape/Grenache/). The spicy, fruity taste leaves a soft taste in your mouth.

You will get a distinct taste of vanilla and blackberry. The wines made from this grape become more complex and better tasting the longer they age. The California Mourvedre wines are tannic and full bodied. There are about 500 acres of this grape variety in California, the most notable of which is the Mount Veeder region.

The deep red coloring of Mourvedre wines is very striking. The earthy scent is very strong, so much so that you may even think that the wine has spoiled in the bottle, but this is not so. The flavors tend to dissolve in the strong aroma the longer they age.

Even though it is bottled and sold as a separate wine, it is greatly enhanced by the addition of the fruity taste of Grenache or the spice and tannin of Syrah. This wine goes well with meat and poultry dishes, as well as those containing mushrooms and root vegetables.

One of the best Mourvedre wines is that of the Spanish wine, Juan Gil, which is 100% Mourvedre. The low yields of the grapes used in this wine are grown in chalky soils made up of limestone and rock. The wine has a rich, vibrant color and an excellent blend of earthy flavors and fruity taste. This wine will last three or four years when left in the bottle, unopened of course.

When searching for the wines you want to serve at various events and with certain meals, you will find what you need when you search online. You don`t have to travel throughout the country visiting wineries that produce Mourvedre wines. You are able to place an order online and receive your delivery at your door.

Cabernet Sauvignon - One of the Most Common Varieties

September 30, 2009

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is one of the most commonly grown grapes in the world, the red version of Chardonnay (http://www.wineaccess.com/wine/grape/Chardonnay). It adds splendor and flavor to red wines the longer they are allowed to age. The thick skin of this grape gives the wine made from it has a high tannin, but many wineries temper this by blending in wines with low tannin.

The name “sauvignon” means wild and it is thought that these grapes grew wild in the Bordeaux region of France, but recent testing shows that the grape likely resulted from the crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in the 17th century.

The grapes can be grown in a variety of climates and are one of the last ones to ripen. The climate of the growing season determines how early they can be harvested so the harvest season varies from country to country. Oak is used during the wine making process to give it is distinctive taste.

The Sauvignon can be blended with other varieties of grapes, such as Syrah (http://www.wineaccess.com/wine/grape/Syrah/Shiraz) and Merlot. Many wineries ferment and age the grapes separately before blending several varieties into one wine. The flavor of Cabernet Sauvignon can also depend on the length of time the must (juice of the fruit) is in contact with the skin before fermentation.

In the Bordeaux region, this period, called the maceration period, is three weeks. This then requires a longer period of aging for the wine. Winemakers who want to produce a wine that is ready for consumption in a relatively short period of time cut down on this maceration period significantly, often limiting it to only a few days.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the wines most noted for its affinity to being aged in oak casks. This helps to soften the tartness of the taste and give it the taste and aroma of vanilla and spices that help to temper the tobacco aroma. Different varieties of oak also have a different effect on the taste of the wine.

Barrels made from American oak will give the wine a stronger taste than those made from French oak. There are also different varieties of American oak that will play different roles in the resulting taste of the wine that are aged in the barrels made from them.

Another factor that affects the overall taste of Cabernet Sauvignon is the ripeness of the grapes when they are harvested. If they are not quite ripe, the resulting wine will have a strong bell pepper taste. If the grapes are too ripe, the aroma may be that of black currants. Some wineries use a variety of techniques that include harvesting the grapes at different stages of ripeness and then blending them all together in one wine.

Since Cabernet Sauvignon is a very bold wine, you do have to be careful about the choice of food you serve with it. The taste does tend to overpower light and delicate dishes. It works well when served with steak dishes or dishes that involve a heavy sauce made of cream because the taste of these foods helps to soften the tannins in the wine.

If you serve this wine with pasta or rice dishes, you may find that the wine is too strong and you cannot get the taste of the food. Wines from the Bordeaux region work well when paired with dishes containing mushrooms. This wine is the perfect one to pair with bitter chocolate, but it does not work well with the smooth taste of milk chocolate.

Ivy For Your Home And Garden

September 30, 2009

This plant, in some of its varieties, is probably the most popular ornament of the parlor. The ease of culture, its beautiful foliage, its rapid growth, and evergreen character all combine to make it a favorite.

The soil should be a rich loam; the richer the soil the more rapid will be the growth. Yet avoid stimulating manures. Slips root readily, taken off at any leaf joint, and placed either in earth or water; in the latter they will soon throw out roots, and may then be transferred to pots.

The only precaution to be taken in growing ivy is to keep it from frost while in growth and if frozen, to keep the sun away from it, thawing it out with cold water from whatever garden water feature (http://www.garden-fountains.com/Detail.bok?no=2922) you possess. In summer the plants may be set out of doors, and will make vigorous growth.

There are many species, of which the most common is Hedera Helix, the common twining ivy, a native of Europe, of which there are many varieties. The leaves of these varieties vary quite a bit and many distinctions have been founded on these variations.

There are two very beautiful kinds, the silver and golden, the foliage being beautifully variegated with white and gold. The Tree or Aborescent Ivy is merely a form of the common variety, which is shown by its returning to the primal Aborescent form not infrequently. The leaves are entire, and the plant often, retains its form for years.

H. Roegneriana is a variety with large, heart-shaped leaves, which is much esteemed.

H. digitata, the palmate or hand-shaped Ivy is a pretty variety, of rapid growth; the leaves are small, dark, and veined. This is often called, erroneously, the Irish Ivy.

H. Canariensis is the Irish, or Giant Ivy, the leaves are five-lobed, and larger than those of the common ivy. This type of ivy may not be best for areas where patio statuary (http://www.garden-fountains.com/Detail.bok?no=3416) is on display since it can grow quite large and overshadow the statues.

Almost all the varieties of nurserymen’s’ catalogs are merely forms of these, with peculiar foliage.

The Golden Ivy is a splendid plant; when the young

leaves come out it resembles a mass of yellow flowers. Ivies are grown in hanging baskets, around windows, made to trail around picture frames and looking glasses; indeed, they may be made decorative in the highest degree.

The plants should always be well supplied with water, though it should never be allowed to stand at the roots. Large plants of the common varieties may be procured inexpensively. The ornamental foliaged varieties are somewhat pricier.

If you have ivy growing out of doors (and it will thrive if you keep the winter’s sun away from it), a pretty effect may be produced by cutting large branches, and keeping them in vases or outdoor fountains of rain water. They will grow well all winter, and planted in spring make nice plants for autumn.

The plant commonly known as German Ivy is not an ivy; the botanical name is Senecio Scandens. It is deservedly popular, from its rapid growth and its freedom from insects. The Coliseum Ivy is a species of Snap-dragon, as may be seen from an examination of the flowers, and a very pretty plant it is; botanically it is Linaria Cymbalaria.

Five-leaved Ivy is the Virginia Creeper or Woodbine (Ampelopsis Virginica), a native of our woods. The Poison Ivy is Rhus Radicans or Rhus Toxicodendron, and not of the same family as any of the above.

Sarah Martin is a freelance marketing writer based out of San Diego, CA. She specializes in landscaping, gardening, and the placement and collection of outdoor fountains. For a wide variety of patio statuary, please visit http://www.garden-fountains.com/.

Gay Travel to France

September 30, 2009

Whether traveling to France on a trip across Europe, of visiting this popular country as your vacation destination, travelers will find magnificent beaches, alpine resorts, breathtaking countryside with quaint villages and medieval castles, world-renowned art collections, the glorious French Riviera and the truly unique, exceptional city of Paris.

While travelers partaking in gay vacations often plan their trip around Paris and its vibrant LGBT community, cultural and historical landmarks and accepting cosmopolitan environment, visitors will find that throughout France there is plenty to do and see, as well as many LGBT establishments and a welcoming atmosphere. Laws outlawing sodomy were abolished over 200 years ago and France’s LGBT community has enjoyed civil unions for the last decade. With legal protections in place and a general laissez-faire attitude that is common among the French, visitors will find that France provides an accepting, safe haven for gay vacations.

Numerous community events take place across the country throughout the year, including several pride festivals and a very well-attended pride parade and festival and gay and lesbian film festival in Paris. Some unique establishments to check out while in Paris on a gay vacation include the Marais district LGBT-owned bakery, Legay Choc; the ArtMenParis exhibit of all-male images; and Madame Arthur, L’Artishow and Chez Michou, three cabarets with female impersonators and drag shows. Paris nightlife is lively, with bars open from afternoon until 2am and clubs opening at midnight, and often staying open until noon.

For men who are interested in experiencing the bawdier side of Parisian life, sex clubs, cruising spots and bars with backrooms are easy to find for visitors on gay vacations. Paris is also home to a plethora of saunas, also known as bathhouses, which are popular attractions for both locals and visitors. Saunas are not open 24-hours in France and do not have private rooms to rent. For privacy, visitors can enjoy relaxation cubicles and out-of-towners should keep in mind that going to a sauna is a primarily afternoon activity in Paris, with Sunday afternoons being the most crowded.

While most gay travel destinations cater largely to men, women will find that Paris has a lively lesbian scene that includes everything from a lesbian walking group to a sex shop just for the girls. The Marais district is the center of LGBT life in Paris, and women will find a distinct Sapphic presence there, with bars and clubs that are located mostly at the south end. Ladies will also find several venues sprinkled throughout other neighborhoods, such as the Halles-Beaubourg, Palais Royal, Grands Boulevards and Saint Germain des Pres districts. There is also a bookshop in the Bastille-Republique district and one of the oldest lesbian bars in the city is located in the Palais Royal area.

Although Paris might be the most visited gay vacation destination in France, many other options are available throughout the country, including Avignon in Provence, Montpellier and Nice on the Mediterranian coast, Annecy in the Alps, Nantes in Brittany and the nude community beaches of Camargue. For those who hope to rub elbows with the rich and famous, Saint Tropez on the French Riviera should not be missed, while those looking for a romantic retreat might opt for an LGBT-owned B & B outside of Bourdeaux. With so many gay travel options to choose from, France is truly an ideal setting for a gay vacation.

Pal Joey Tickets- Risch Officially Takes Lead

September 30, 2009

Although he wasn’t originally cast in the role, Matthew Risch has been named to the lead role of the musical Pal Joey. The musical had to go on hold after November 21, when the person cast as the role, Christian Hoff, suffered a foot injury. The show was on hold for Risch to learn the role before starting up again not long after. Hoff withdrew from the role, giving Risch the lead role. Before he was injured, Hoff performed the role in the show’s previews. The switch is a big change for Pal Joey as they are going from a seasoned lead to a young, fresh face on the Broadway scene.

Hoff has been performing on stage since he was eight years old. The California native was already on the fast track to success at a young age, even appearing on television on a special with Shirley MacLaine. He started getting more stage experience like in the original Los Angeles Company production of Evita. Along with building more of a stage career, Hoff also started appearing on film and in television. Some of his early television appearances include Quincy M.E., St. Elsewhere and Who’s the Boss. More recently, he has been seen in shows like Ugly Betty, ER, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Fantasy Island. In 2006, Hoff appeared in Jersey Boys, where he originated the role of Tommy DeVito. The performance earned him a Tony Award that year as well as a Drama Desk Award nomination.

Although he may not yet boast a Tony Award, Matthew Risch could be working his way there with this very role. Risch was educated at the well-regarded College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been seen on Broadway as Carlos in Legally Blonde and as Fred Casely in Chicago. He was also part of the touring show of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His appearance in Legally Blonde was with the original Broadway production. He was also part of the recording for the show. The change in the cast means that the official press opening was pushed back from December 11 to December 18. Risch is surely going to be one of the next hot leads on Broadway, meaning fans will want to get out to see him live on stage. You can reserve your Pal Joey tickets at http://www.stubhub.com/pal-joey-tickets.

Pal Joey has been around for some time on Broadway. It tells the story of a charming but conniving performer who dreams of owning his own nightclub. Although he holds the affections of a young girl named Linda, he disregards the relationship in order to pursue an older married woman, Vera, whom he thinks could finance his endeavor. The music and lyrics were written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. They have written together numerous times before in shows like I Married an Angel, Too Many Girls and By Jupiter. Rodgers is also known for his famed teaming with Oscar Hammerstein II. The original book for the show was written by John O-Hara, and Richard Greenberg wrote the new book.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Tickets- Gates Joins London Cast

September 30, 2009

The UK version of American Idol, Pop Idol, has given rise to the career of Gareth Gates, who has turned his attention from climbing the charts to performing on stage. He will now get to fulfill a lifelong dream by making his West End debut as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He will be replacing Lee Mead. Mead won the role of Joseph on the BBC1 reality show called Any Dream Will Do and will be ending his run in January. Gates will not start performing until February, and in the meantime Mead’s understudy, Ricky Rojas, will take the role. The show in London has been running at the Adelphi Theatre wince July of 2007. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat first appeared in London in 1991.

Coincidentally, it was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that was one of the driving factors to get Gates into music in the first place. He got to play the title role when he was just eight years old in a school production of the show. Around the same time, Gates started singing in the Bradford Cathedral Choir, where he was almost instantly recognized for his talent. He moved up to be the head chorister when he was 11 years old. Two years later, he got the opportunity to sing for the Queen. He was also gaining instrument experience, being classically trained in piano and guitar as well as vocals.

His accomplishments led to a spot at the prestigious Northern College of Music. Gates found his first big break when he was on Pop Idol in 2002. He came in second, but soon inked a deal with BMG, meaning he had to give up his spot at the Northern College of Music. He released a top album and single not long after, selling 3.5 million copies of his record. He followed up the release with a sold-out tour. Throughout his time on Idol, Gates publically struggled with stammering. He overcame the stammering after the show ended and showcased his journey with a television documentary. More recently, he has been part of Dancing On Ice as well as many charity events. Before he takes to role of Joseph, Gates will have to finish up his role as Prince Charming in the London stage production of Cinderella. His popularity will surely help the sales of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tickets, which you can get at http://www.stubhub.com/joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-dreamcoat-tickets.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been a favorite stage show for decades. The lyrics were done by Tim Rice with the composer and producer being none other than the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story follows the biblical story of Joseph, one of 12 brothers. Joseph is the favorite son and therefore gets betrayed by his brothers out of jealousy and sold as a slave in Egypt. Little do the brothers know they will need his help later. The show brings the hilarious and creative touches of Rice and Lloyd Webber with songs ranging in styles from go-go to country, rock and roll and Caribbean.

Fiddler on the Roof Tickets- Topol Joins 2009 Tour

September 30, 2009

For fans who have been waiting to get Fiddler on the Roof tickets, it doesn’t get any better than now. The reason is that Chaim Topol is returning to a role he made famous: that of the family’s patriarch, Tevya. Topol became famous for the role when appeared in the 1971 film version of the musical, earning him a nomination for Best Actor at the 1972 Academy Awards. He did win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Tevya. The appearance came after Topol had already gained acclaim in the role in the London production of the show. At the time of his rise to fame, Topol was barely old enough to play the role of a man with numerous grown daughters. He has also played the role in the 1991 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. The revival itself won a Tony for Best Revival.

Topol was born in 1935 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Before his film role in Fiddler on the Roof, Topol had already appeared in a variety of films like El Dorado, Sallah Shabiti, A Talent for Loving, Before Winter Comes, Cast a Giant Shadow and Ervinka. His post-Fiddler Movie appearances include Galileo, The House on Garibaldi Street, Flash Gordon and For Your Eyes Only. Along with acting, Topol has also moved into producing. He produced Kol Mamzer Melech and Shehuna Shelanu, Ha-. As of late, he also again took the role of Tevya in the Australian production. Fans can reserve their spot to his show at http://StubHub.com.

Fiddler on the Roof follows the story of Tevya, a Jewish milkman, who is trying to make a life for himself and his family in Russia during the early 1900s. In Tevya’s mind, everyone in his culture should follow its traditions, which include proper avenues to go about everything from praying to marrying. A twist is thrown into Tevya’s plans for his daughters as he tries to start marrying them off through the matchmaker. The girls have different ideas about what love should look like, much to the chagrin of their father. At the same time, the Jewish village is dealing with the distinct possibility of a revolution as well as face oppression. Through it all, Tevya does his best to keep his family functioning.

The show has been part of the world musical culture since the 1960s and continues to stay relevant even today. The book was written by Joseph Stein but was based on the stories of writer Sholom Aleichem. The music is by Jerry Bock with the lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Bock and Harnick have written together before and since, creating shows like Fiorello!, The Body Beautiful, Tenderloin, The Apple Tree and The Rothschilds. There most famous show, of course, was the creation of Fiddler on the Roof. If you want to make sure and see this Fiddler on the Roof with Chaim Topol, visit http://www.stubhub.com/fiddler-on-the-roof-tickets to get your tickets.

Jersey Boys Tickets- May Joins Vegas Cast

September 30, 2009

The Las Vegas production of the hit musical Jersey Boys will be adding a face that has proven himself on stage over and over again: Deven May. He will take over as Tommy DeVito starting at the beginning of December. He is very familiar with the role as he played DeVito in the national tour of the show. He will be joining Erich Bergen as Bob Gaudio, Rick Faugno as Frankie Valli and Jeff Leibow as Nick Massi. He is replacing Erik Bates, who is leaving the Las Vegas show to join the touring production of Jersey Boys.

May grew up in San Diego, California and loved acting from a young age. His parents, however, were not as keen on the idea of May trying to make his way as an actor. They were worried that he would have problems keeping steady work. In the last decade, May has developed enough of a reputation for that no longer to be a concern. He is also an accomplished graphic designer and photographer. He was working as a graphic designer and also a character at Universal Studios when he first stumbled onto his big break. He tried out by a new musical created about a famous tabloid story in the Weekly World News, called Bat Boy, The Musical. May was instantly recognized by lyricist and composer Laurence O’Keefe for his ability to transform into a variety of characters seamlessly.

May was cast to create the title role of the show, which meant him shaving his head and donning a ridiculous amount of makeup to transform into the famed batboy. He was first seen in the role in Los Angeles in 1997. The show was a success with critics, as was May. He stayed with the show as it moved to New York in 2000 and then to Off-Broadway in 2001. He also played the same role when the musical went to London’s West End. May has been making a name for himself in other shows as well like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, Elegies and Warrior. Fans can see him in his latest role by getting Jersey Boys tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/jersey-boys-tickets.

Jersey Boys tells the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The Four Seasons started out as poor blue-collar boys from New Jersey who were determined to make it to musical stardom. The show has won numerous Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy and many others. While other biographical musicals have failed, Jersey Boys has become one of the top musicals on stages around the world. Fans love hearing the well-known songs performed like “ Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “You’re the Apple of My Eye,” “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and “Working My Way Back to You.” Perhaps what has helped the show succeed is the involvement of some of the original band members in the new production. It also didn’t hurt to have veterans Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice write the book.

How to Make Your Own Unusual Cocktail Coaster

September 30, 2009

When it comes to choosing a cocktail coaster, your choices are virtually unlimited for ways of livening up a party. Unusual coasters will undoubtedly become the focus of conversation and bring about a few laughs depending on your choice.

How about glass coasters that have been treated with silicone? Such coasters are made from two layers of glass that are fused together. Once the glass has been annealed and cooled, then silicone feet are added to the bottom of the coasters to provide the protection that your furniture needs.

Your guests will surely delight in using a beaded cocktail coaster (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-Naturals/Categories) that you made yourself. If you have a talent for crafts, this is one area in which you can really shine. The best type of beads to use for this reason is seed beads called rocailles, which you buy in hanks.

You do need to make sure that all the beads you choose are about the same size so that you have an even coaster. Since they come in a wide variety of colors, you can customize your decor with these coasters.

In addition to beads, you will need to collect the following materials:

• cork for the backing

• waterproof glue that dries quickly

• pins to hold the beads in place

• small paintbrush

• felt in the color of your choice

• scissors

• pencil

• construction paper

Cut out the shape of beverage coaster (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-893/Deer-&-Canoe-Beverage/Detail) you want to make by tracing the shape on the construction paper. Take off part of the string of beads – enough to completely cover this shape. It is easier to cover a circular shape in this way than any other, but you can use a square or rectangular shape as well.

Take care when you cut the string of beads that you tie a slipknot in the end to prevent the beads from all falling off. This refers to both the portion of the hank that you will be using and the portion that you want to use for another coaster.

Use the construction paper form to help you cut the felt. Place a thin layer of glue in the center of the felt circle and start gluing the beads in place by arranging them in circles from the middle to the outer edge.

Apply the glue with the small paintbrush or with a glue gun and then arrange the beads in place. When the glue is dry, turn the drink coaster over and coat the bottom with glue. Cut a piece of cork in the same shape and stick it to the bottom. If you want to provide a protective coating, you can apply a small amount of clear varnish to the beads.

This type of cocktail coaster is very absorbent. The liquid from the glass will drip through the beads into the felt and into the cork. The felt will allow the water to evaporate into the air, as will the cork. However, if you want to clean this type of coaster, you will have to wipe it clean with a damp cloth. The beads may come off the coaster if you put it in the dishwasher where the heat will melt the glue.

When you experiment with this craft, you can make a cocktail coaster for every color of the rainbow. Guests will surely want to know where you bought them and this could even be the start of a profitable home-based business when they place orders for coasters.

Choose an Elegant Drink Coaster Made of Stone

September 30, 2009

The most absorbent drink coaster is one made of stone. There are many different types of sandstone coasters you can purchase for the purpose of providing a base on which your guests can rest their drinks to avoid the moisture from collecting on your furniture and marring the finish. Coasters made from absorbent stone have a cork or rubber protective bottom so that they won’t scratch your furniture and keep the drink from sliding off.

A drink coaster made from Indian sandstone contains an explosion of colors that will complement any room decor. The trail of colors shows the stone in a smooth texture. Experience the colors of shifting sands or a complex pattern of hues that present a stunning visual effect. Other options in this material for drink coasters (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-Name-Drops/Categories) include ruby red coasters that give the impression of desert sand. You can also choose neutral colors that will not overpower your decor but blend in naturally with the wood on which they are placed.

A marble drink coaster is very elegant. The colors are reminiscent of ancient times, since this stone itself has existed since before history. These coasters are hand crafted and polished and if you look closely you may be able to see traces of fossils in the surface. There is a wide range of options for you to choose from in this variety from having coasters with images of clouds in the stone to those that are fiery red or midnight black.

Natural slate is also a popular material used in the manufacture of drink coasters. Since slate forms in layers in the environment, each drink coaster may have slightly different colors. This is due to the collection of chemicals present at each stage of the formation of the slate. Each layer seems to blend into the other creating seamless lines of color that present a very elegant surface. Two of the most popular coasters in this stone are those made from African slate and Indian slate.

A drink coaster made from limestone is also very absorbent. You can see the weathering of the rock in the colors of the stone coaster (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-Garden-Accents/Categories). A golden color will make you think of bright sunny days in the depths of winter while one that is blue-gray in color will help you recall images of the ocean and soft summer breezes.

Some forms of stone are more porous than others and thus will hold more of the liquid that condenses on the outside of the glass. Most of the manufacturers do coat the surface with varnish to add a protective coating on the stone, but this does not detract from its absorbent quality. Some of them are really expensive when made from imported stone and can become collector’s items. A drink coaster made from Chinese slate, for example, seems to look like a map of the earth with darker brown sections that look like the continents.

One thing that you have to be careful about when you buy a stone drink coaster set is that you cannot put these coasters in the dishwasher. Although they do need to be cleaned for them to retain their absorbent and porous qualities, you only need to wipe them off with a damp cloth. If you do need to give them a more rigorous cleaning to remove stains, make sure you do not use a harsh detergent and let them dry in the air.
