Wake Up to the Smell of Breakfast
January 5, 2009
As we often hear health experts say, we need to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. However, for many busy individuals even the most basic breakfast is impossible, especially when one has to wake up at 4 am just to catch the early morning commute. Add that to preparing packed lunches for the kids and getting them ready for school and it almost always adds up to rush, rush mornings.
This is a scene that is replayed in most homes each weekday morning. Despite the fact that most people are guilty of rushing through breakfast or just missing it altogether, we could not deny the fact that breakfast is the most important meal for the day, especially for our kids. After a long period of fasting through the night, it is the nutrition that we get at breakfast that will get us through our day. So yes, we do have to eat like a King.
To address the need for nutrition at breakfast, we now have a wide choice of healthy breakfast meals to choose from. We have cereals of different flavors, instant oats, instant waffles, instant everything. Even eggs now come in tetra-packages, ready to be poured onto a hot skillet for instant scrambled eggs. But then again, we can only have so much cereal and instant foods before we grow tired of it.
Luckily, we now have the option to wake up to the smell of breakfast, with a breakfast fit for a King waiting for us in the kitchen. How? Crock Pot breakfasts! When you know you have absolutely no time to make anything in the morning and you feel like you just cannot have another bowl of cereal or instant oats the next day, it’s time to take out your crock pot and whip up a breakfast casserole the night before. It will be warm, ready and waiting the moment you wake up.
Breakfast Suggestions
•Southwest Crock Pot Breakfast- With your Crock Pot you could choose to have a Southwest-themed breakfast with peppers, chilies and cheese and a whole lot of sausage. Prepare all the ingredients you want with your favorite Southwest-inspired recipes and layer them in your Crock Pot. Plug the Crock Pot in just before bed time and have sour cream or fresh salsa ready in the fridge. A hearty and hot Southwest Crock Pot breakfast could be just what you need to pick you up in the morning.
•Crock Pot Cobbler- Check out your fresh food section at the grocery or your favorite fruit market for the freshest fruits in season. Apples, peaches and pears make for great, warm, breakfast cobblers using your Crock Pot. You can use just one kind of fruit or mix it up! Combine fruit slices or chunks with granola and cinnamon, place in your crock pot and drizzle with a honey-butter mixture. The cobbler will cook through the night and will greet you with its sweet smell in the morning.
Making breakfast using a Crock Pot will actually be more than just a convenience for some. In areas where electric current charges are lower at night, Crock Pot cooking will also allow you to save up on costs.
So go ahead, eat breakfast like a king. There’s nothing better to get you through the day.

What You Should Remember When You First Start Barbequing
January 5, 2009
If you were asked to name a true American tradition, it is most likely you will answer: barbequing. There comes a stage in our life that every American finds themselves with a grill for the first time. If you have a good experience the first time, there sure will folow more and more.
Planning Ahead
Barbequing exists sine early caveman found out that their food tasted better after it was cooked on an open fire. Maybe one of the main memories attached to a family barbeque is what was on the menu that day. When you barbeque, you open a whole array of types of foods available. What type of food you will serve, should depend on the people you invite and the event you are celebrating. Because of the wide range of possibilities you will always find something that pleases your crowd.
There is one potential issue when barbequing: the weather. You can’t guarantee that the weather will be nice for your barbeque event, but with a certain amount of planning you will be able to avoid the days in which barbequing is just simply out of the picture. Check online for your weekly forecast or watch the weather channel, if it’s going to be cold or rainy on the day you were thinking about planning your barbeque, it might be better to wait for a better forecast.
Start the preparations for your barbeque ahead of time. About 12 to 24 hours before your party starts, you need to make sure that you thaw, prepare and marinate the meat you will be serving. Once the meat is stored away, marinating, then you should start thinking about your side dishes. If you want a traditional barbeque, you should stick to traditional side dishes. The traditional barbeque sides include potatoes, potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw.
Maintenance
When it is time to clean your barbeque grill, you will need to have some common household items on hand.
Brass wire grill brush
Steel wool pads, preferably that contains soap already.
Mild dish soap
Sponge or dishcloth
Spray cooking oil
Dry baking soda
Aluminum foil
The first thing that should always be done to your grill is a routine brushing. Using your brass wire grill brush (or other brush suitable to your type of grill) you should brush off all the surfaces. By routinely brushing your barbeque grill, you will prevent any type of buildup. If buildup from food is left to long, it can become increasingly difficult to remove. Once you have cleaned the surfaces of your grill, then you must focus on its racks. The racks in your grill are especially important as this is where the food touches when it is cooking. You will have to use the wire brush to remove as much buildup as possible. Once you remove as much as possible, start washing the racks with dish soap. If the racks are really dirty, you may also want to use the steel wool pads. Be sure to completely rinse off all soap and residue before cooking on these racks again.
This process should be completed each and every time you cook on your barbeque grill. If these steps are not taken, you may find it increasingly difficult to clean your grill, and may find that damage will occur.
The majority of problems that arise from barbeque grills comes from lack of cleaning and maintenance. That means if you notice something does not seem quite right with your barbeque grill, chances are it can be fixed with just a simple cleaning. Even if you clean it, and still find that it is having problems, at least you saved yourself the potential embarrassment of taking it to a professional only to find out all it needed was to be cleaned.
Finally, one method of preventing problems with your barbeque grill is protecting it from the outdoors. Covers are available for grills in all shapes and sizes, so chances are, you will find one that fits your grill. If you have a cover for your barbeque grill, then all you will ever need to do is do the regular maintenance listed above.

Holiday Dessert Shortcuts From Some Real Experts
December 28, 2008
I was having lunch in my favorite Thai restaurant last week while waiting to discuss an order for hand embroidered Thai shirts for employees, and I had the privilege of being seated near enough to a group of eight ladies that I could clearly overhear their conversation.
After the usual ice-breaker conversation about how everyone was and how things were with their respective jobs, one of them asked, “So, what’s everyone doing for the holidays?”
Answers included traveling to be with family, staying in town to attend an annual gathering of friends who live away from their families, and one ambitious one who announced she and her family would be meeting at their mountain cabin where she would cook the traditional Thanksgiving meal – all from scratch, including her apple and pumpkin pies.
The group quickly pronounced that ambitious one as insane even though she defended her fresh approach using organic and natural products, like honey in her pies and candied yams, as one of the greatest days of her year.
Finally, time came for the one who originally asked the question to answer the question. I’ve dubbed her the grandmother because she said her two children, their spouses, and five grandchildren were coming for Thanksgiving Day and she was planning to spend as much with them as possible.
Another lady asked the grandmother how she could spend any time with them while preparing a meal for that many people, and the answer really caught my ears, “You wanna hear a little secret?”
All heads nodded, so she continued, “I buy a really good brand of frozen apple pie, then let thaw for about a half-hour. Then I carefully slip it into my own pie dish, brush it with milk and sprinkle on a little sugar to give it that nice glazed top, then I bake as directed. Voila! In no time I have a pie people always rave about with very little effort.”
“Wow, that would also work with pumpkin pie,” one of the ladies planning to attend the friend get-together piped in. “That’s what I’ve been asked to bring this year and I was going to buy the pie at the bakery, but I think I’ll try ‘baking my own.’”
They all laughed heartily, then the conversation continued with a suggestion that you could buy an entire turkey dinner at the supermarket and serve it beautifully on china platters and bowls and never have to admit to not having done all the work.
They discussed the virtues of instant mashed potatoes and how adding a few spices and some extra butter enhances the flavor. They mentioned gravy mixes for a lump free topping on those potatoes. Brown and serve rolls from the supermarket, and frozen vs canned string beans for a casserole.
The general theme of this group was to minimize how much time they spent in the kitchen and maximize how much time they spent with family and friends.
As the lunch hour wound down, I couldn’t resist walking over to their table and presenting them with business cards with a World Shopper’s Club first order discount code on the back. In an apologetic introductory tone, I said, “I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation and I’d like to suggest you check out the food items we have to help you with your holiday cooking. We have soup mixes, desserts, and of course spices and honey for those you who like to cook,” as I deliberately gestured toward the previously proclaimed insane one planning to do the entire Thanksgiving meal from scratch.
Then, I thanked them in the best way I knew how by telling them with a wink
toward the grandmother that I’ll be providing an apple pie for my family’s Thanksgiving dinner. “Served from my own apple pie dish of course.”

Choosing a Barbeque Ribs Recipe
December 28, 2008
When you start grilling you may find that the BBQ ribs recipes that you are using are creating food that is more bland than you would prefer. To really get the most out of your grilling, taking a look at various BBQ ribs recipes can help you add a great deal of flavor and savor to your meat. Your family and friends will thank you, not to mention the self satisfaction that comes from a very good ribs recipe! Finding the BBQ ribs recipes that best suits you can be a rather long affair, but you can be sure that when you find the perfect one for you that you will be happy that you looked.
To get the most from your BBQ ribs recipes, think about what tastes you like. You’ll find that it takes a lot more to make a great barbecue than just splashing on the sauce. The more you know about what you are after, the better off you will be when it comes to looking for it. For instance, do you think that you prefer BBQ ribs recipes that are more sweet than not? Many people love ribs that are very sweet, and you’ll find that you are looking for recipes that call for brown sugar or honey. If, on the other and, you are looking for something that is more sharp or more hot, take a look at recipes that call for different types of pepper, whether you are looking for something mild or something much more powerful.
You’ll also want to remember that good BBQ ribs recipes will take some time. While you might be tempted to just leave off getting the meat until the day of the barbecue, you’ll find that your ribs do a lot better with at least eight to twelve hours to prepare. You’ll find that ribs can be left to marinate overnight, and this will let the juices from the marinade really soak in. There is a large part of the effort that it takes to make sure that your meat will take on a lot of flavor, so make sure that you plan your ribs well in advance.
It is very important to take time to let the meat cook thoroughly, but not to let it overcook. When you cook meat in a way that leave it half undone, keep in mind that while you will be retaining a great deal of the taste of the original meat, you will also be letting go of some of the marinade. Think about what you want out of your cooking experience and take the time to plan what pieces should be moved early and which should be moved later.
You’ll find that there are plenty of good BBQ ribs recipes out there that can really make your taste buds dance, so take the time to hunt them down. There are plenty of BBQ ribs recipes out there, so what are you waiting for? Get going and make some BBQ Ribs today!

Cooking Kids
December 27, 2008
Everything revolves around the kitchen. People are naturally drawn to this room of the house and kids are no exception. Whether its watching a parent or adult role model cook or getting the opportunity to help prepare a meal, children welcome the opportunity to be in the kitchen where the action is.
Teaching and allowing little ones to cook and help prepare meals is a great way to help them develop an appreciation for a variety of foods and tastes. Kids are more apt to eat what they have been allowed to help prepare. So if you have the time, and in some cases the patience, you should take the time to show your little ones how to cook. Not Just Icing on the Cake
December 25, 2008
It’s not just about icing on the cake; sometimes, it’s ALL about the icing on the cake.
We often refer to things that are not very important in the achievement of a goal, or a bonus to the success that we have obtained, as simply ‘icing on the cake’. For people who know baking and designing cupcakes, the icing is not a mere extra. Often, it gives the cupcake that instant appeal that makes people actually want to reach out and pick it up from among the others on the shelf.
Let’s face it. Even if we make the best tasting cupcake, a regular guy will not pick it up unless it looks appetizing enough. Thus, it is the icing that actually sells the product. As the front liner, the icing needs to be given sufficient attention. It is not really difficult to do, but as a unique form of art, it may require skills and practice.
Frosting, Icing or Glaze
Many people think the terms ‘frosting’, ‘icing’ and ‘glaze’ are interchangeable as they are all sweet blends used to coat or top cupcakes. Well, to some extent, they probably are. However, a purist would beg to differ.
In very strict icing terms, frosting is thicker than icing and icing is thicker than glaze. Frosting is usually made of butter, sugar and milk. It is firm enough to better keep its shape but it still remains soft and smooth to the touch. Icing is typically made of butter, sugar and eggs while glaze is made of powdered sugar and milk or water.
Putting the Icing on the Cake
To facilitate easier discussion, let us just refer to icing and keep in mind that these points can be applied to frosting and glaze, too. A little more care is exercised when handling glaze though, as it has a very thin texture.
There are two common ways to add icing on your cupcake. You can use a spatula or a pastry bag. Most professionally done cupcake decorations are made using a pastry bag. It gives the designer better control especially in making swirls and stripes, which the spatula cannot provide. Spatulas are best used to even out icing on the cupcake. Of course, it is better to have both to be able to take advantage of their unique benefits.
Tips for Icing Cupcakes
Never ice warm cupcakes. The icing will almost certainly melt with the heat from the cupcakes and it will lose its form. When traveling with cupcakes, it is best to use frosting which have been pre-chilled to make it hold its shape longer.
Although you may keep the cupcakes in freezers for 2 to 3 days, they are best eaten on the same day they were made. The icing can change its form and the cupcake may look a little less appetizing.
For variety, you may add flavors to your icing. Among the common favorites are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and banana. You can also experiment and make your own flavors.
The cupcake’s flavor is still the main thing, of course, but the icing flavor is not to be discounted. It really is not just icing on the cake. The icing is the ‘face’ of the cupcake, and this usually spells the difference between passing up or taking a bite.

Cooking Your Way to Your Family’s Heart
December 21, 2008
The easiest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach- so says a rather famous adage. While there is a certain amount of truth in the statement, the debate arises in that preparing and serving the right foods is actually the best way not only the man’s heart but to just about everybody’s heart. Food is not only a basic requirement for people to survive; it is also one of our greatest passions.
Food is the center of most social events – from the biggest of parties to the smaller family dinners. As a well-prepared meal can bring a special touch to a simple family gathering, it is typical that we try to give our best every time we cook for our family.
One of the most common reasons that hinder us from preparing the best meals is our busy schedules. We have a full day at work and then tons of chores that need to be done when we get home from work. We have to guide our kids with their home works and we need to make some time for our partners, too. With all these tasks, where do we fit the cooking part? Often, we fall into the convenient cycle of buying processed foods or ordering from a local restaurant. This can be not only completely unhealthy but costly as well.
Time to bring out the Crock Pot
While it may be difficult for some to spare a little time to cook everyday, it would definitely be a nice treat for the family if we could find time to cook at least a few times every week. There is no need for a grand preparation or to skip other tasks. All you need is a trusty Crock Pot slow cooker.
A Crock Pot is a very dependable kitchen appliance that heats food over low to moderate temperatures for a long period. The slow cooking can effectively release the natural flavor of the food without losing its nutrients. The resulting food is tender, healthy and flavorful.
A Crock Pot allows you to cook with less than the effort needed using other different cooking styles. After preparing the raw food in your slow cooker, you can start the appliance and leave it to do the cooking for you. You can actually play with your kids, help them with their school work, or do other household chores while the food is cooking in the Crock Pot.
Although it needs electricity, the power requirement of most models is low. Thus, energy consumption, even with long periods of cooking, will not be a major problem. Also, even if you become pre-occupied with other things that you have actually forgotten about your cooking, the timers will shut the appliance down for you. This ensures that your meals as well as your house are safe.
Using the same slow cooker, you can prepare a variety of meals to fit different occasions and nutritional needs. From preparing baby food from vegetables to making the finest beef steaks, you can be assured that you can deliver healthy, delicious meals to your family without having to spend much time in the kitchen.
Whether it’s a huge party or a simple family affair, we should know what our best kitchen allies are, so we can share not only more quality time but also more appetizing meals with our loved ones.

Some Interesting Facts About Cooking With Your Rosary – Celtic Rosary
December 17, 2008
Have you ever wondered where Rosary derived its name from? Rosary has its origin in Latin and means a garland made of roses. And, the most common thought that flows into you whenever you think of the Blessed Mother is also the rose. Though according to Catholic Church, the Eucharist or the Crucifix is often the top thought in the mind the Rosary is never an exception whether Catholic or non Catholic. Celtic rosary caters to every denomination of Christianity. For most Christians the Rosary is an essential part of their prayer. Some may choose to place it around their car mirror, while in the case of older nuns, they may prefer to the larger version hanging from their waist. Children in school are often given the blue and pink Rosary to inculcate the habit in them. In recent years, the Rosary has made a big come back. The wide range of Celtic rosary will cater to every aspiration.
Revival of Rosary with Pope John Paul II
It would appear that for a brief while during the 1960s after VaticanII, the Rosary faded a bit in popularity. Several people stopped saying the Rosary and Marian devotions. Pope John Paul II who had a deep commitment to Blessed Mother helped revive the tradition. In recent years, Rosary Recitation has rekindled itself. Pope John Paul II’s love for the Rosary was so intense that he added 5 new mysteries to commemorate his 25th year as Pope. Celtic rosarysalutes Pope John Paul II for this noble service.
The Rosary Sequence – Celtic Rosary
A series of devotional prayers recited sequentially in honor of Virgin Mary is the Rosary. The introductory prayers comprise of One Apostles’ Creed – a statement of faith, Our Father (the Lord’s prayer) handed down to us by Our Lord and forming part of the Sermon on the Mount and the ‘Hail Mary” – a two prayer announced to Mary by Angel Gabriel, and a second part which is an intercessory prayer seeking the help of Our Holy Mother, and finally one Glory Be. It is commonly believed that St.Dominic, the founder of the Dominican order, helped add the Rosary. However, some parts of the Rosary predate Dominic while some others came into existence after his death. Celtic rosary will be glad to assist you in understanding and practicing Rosary better.
The Evolution
All the 150 psalms were being regularly recited by monks several centuries prior to St.Dominic. People in the town used to hear these recitations and though they could never read, mimicked the chant using Our Father reciting it 150 times in place of the 150 psalms. The Hail Mary then was eventually added to the prayers. In later centuries, the intercessory part was also added moving the rosary closer to its present form. Celtic rosary can help you understand these depths further.
The Catholics as well as non Catholics are adopting the Rosary more and more in recent times, and are using it more frequently with more means of learning being available. The Protestants too are getting more devoted to the Rosary and using the prayers. You should choose your Celtic rosary today.

Cupcake Accessories: Adding Fun to Cupcakes
December 11, 2008
Just about everything has changed in modern times. Phones have gone mobile, photos can be printed at home, we can buy whatever we want without having to step outside our home and now cupcakes are on stands. With the many developments that we have encountered, having the traditional cupcake move a step further is one of the most appreciated.
Several years ago, grandmothers prepared cute little cupcakes for her grandchildren whenever they came to visit. A family gathering almost always ended up with a chocolate cupcake as dessert. Nowadays, the cupcake has evolved from the usual chocolate chip flavor to the more intricate forms, such as butterfly cupcakes and many, many more.
In keeping with the trend, accessories used in cupcake preparation and decoration have improved, too. These made the cupcake more interesting and fun to eat.
The Cupcake Pan
The cupcake derived its name from the pottery cup, which was used to bake the cake during the 19th century and gave the traditional cupcake its shape. In recent years, although we still call it ‘cupcake’, its shape is no longer limited to the ‘cup’. We now have adorable cake pans that allow the cupcake to take the form of a flower, an animal face, a feeding bottle, a butterfly and many others.
Pottery cups are also seldom used today. Cake pans that are made from metal or silicone rubber and have 12 depressions, in which the cake batter is placed, have made the baking simpler and more efficient.
The Cupcake Liner
When baking, cupcake liners or round sheets of thin paper are used to provide a thin barrier between the cake and the pan. These liners keep the cupcakes moist and soft and also facilitate easier removal of the cake from the pan after cooking.
The liners used to be limited to white paper material. These days, colorful paper liners with designs that can match your party theme have been made available. It’s like dressing your cupcake for the party. If it’s Cinderella or Batman you want, finding the paper liner that fits your needs is no longer a problem.
There are also other available liners that are not made of paper. Thin aluminum foil and silicon rubber have also been popular materials for cupcake liners as these can stand on their own, allowing baking of cupcakes without cups or specialized cupcake pans.
The Cupcake Stand
The popularity of cupcake as a favorite family dessert has made it a favorite alternative for traditional cakes in parties, such as weddings, baby showers and birthdays. Instead of a having one big cake, hosts prefer a tower of cupcakes. Each one individually designed, the cupcakes provide a more pleasant dessert experience for the guests.
Cupcake stands can have 3 to 6 tiers depending on how large the event is. Most of them can be disassembled for easy storage while others are disposable so you do not have to worry where to keep them after the party. The disposable stands are also cheaper.
Cupcakes have always been a fun way to enjoy dessert, and with the several accessories now available in the market, partying with cupcakes makes everything more enjoyable.
